Akshayuk Pass — Day 5

Day 5 – August 4:  Mount Asgard Scenic View Camp was as beautiful at 06:00 hours as on the previous evening. Water in the reflecting pond had seeped into the surrounding ground overnight making the water level much lower. However, we still had to circumnavigate along a crest of soft grasses then moraine boulders rather…

Days 3 & 4: Auyuittuq- a little beach time

We couldn’t have expected such magnificent weather. Once we got “into the zone” we anticipated each day’s spectacular and changing landscapes. Between km 20 – 23 Peter, our guide, and I walked barefoot enjoying the fine grains of beach sand. A few km later, I switched to MEC paddle boots to muck through the boggy…

The TREK- Day 2

Following our late drop-off at the trail head, we voted to sleep in, enjoy coffee and a leisurely breakfast, and take our time breaking camp. Enroute by 11AM, beautiful pink Broad-leaf willow-herbs dotted our pathways —the northern section has no real trail, just a suggested meander on the map—and seven antlers indicated the presence of…

Qikiqtarjuaq to Trailhead

Fog hovering above the Iqaluit Airport (CYFB) delayed our 09:15 flight to Qikiqtarjauq (Big Island, formerly Broughton Island) and, when we reached Qik, we still needed to have Parks Canada mandatory safety briefing about wilderness camping and Polar Bears! About 2.5 hours later, Captain Billy took us to Co-op store to purchase naphtha for our…

Day 1: Baffin Island Trek

July 30, 2019. Uneventful flight (that the way we like them!) from Ottawa (CYOW) to Iqaluit (CYFB, the FB derived from the English name Frobisher Bay). Tomorrow we’ll be on the 09:00 flight from CYFB to Qikiqtarjuaq, the Inuktituk word for Big Island, and start our 98 km hike of Auyuittuq National Park.

Tom Petty nailed it…

…coming down is the hardest thing! From Refugio Les Mouflons we climbed 869 metres TO the SUMMIT then 869 metres down to the refuge. 2,850′ feet up…2,850′ down…4km up…4km down. This photo gives you an idea of the steepness….Look closely in the snowy area (top right quarter) and you’ll see a group of four descending…

Day 1: Trekking Mount Toubkal

Every mountain presents a different challenge. As you may recall I climbed Kilimanjaro, in July 2018 and as a result, with far too much assurance I assumed if I could tread upon Kili’s 5,895 metre (19,341′) summit, Djebel Toubkal’s 4,167 metre (13,343′) summit would be a cake walk. Wrong again. At first the path was…
